English & Linguistics / Lesbian v. Gay
« on: September 03, 2008, 03:47:31 PM »
I've been talking this over with a coworker today, why is the word "gay" gender neutral AND gender specific, while the word "lesbian" is gender specific only?

What is the tendency know as for a poor risk to seek out insurance coverage more than an average risks?

It may be that I've been studying for eight hours straight, but this seems odd.

I think it's odd that a supposedly, well-educated professor would make such a general statement.

Wow, I'm totally confused.

Are you talking about my wife? Or another Jaimie?

Her dad's from Podunk, Idaho and her parents live right next to where her mom grew up (in Podunk, Utah).

Her family lived in Texas for a few years while she was still growing up. Maybe that's where it's from.

It's a rogue accent.

Yes, she's from Utah. I'm not sure where she got it from.

My wife's gonna hate me for this:

She's got this funky accent that makes her say "mee-an-ayz." She also says family: "fee-am-lee," and pants: "pee-ants."

But, that's just one more reason I love her. (And because she's sitting right here.)

On a side note, Boise is said "boy-see" with a hard "s." Not "boy-zee" with a lazy "z."

I can't understand this phrase. It drives me nuts.

My question is, does this make grammatical sense? I want to say that the sentence is missing a subject whenever I hear it. But when people say: "I'm going to the store, do you want to come with?" It would also make sense that "store" is the subject in the sentence. It seems that the "...do you want to come with?" is a seperate thought and "...do you want to come with me?" would be more correct.

My whole existence hinges on an answer!
