You wanna' come with?
« on: June 18, 2005, 12:33:33 PM »
I can't understand this phrase. It drives me nuts.

My question is, does this make grammatical sense? I want to say that the sentence is missing a subject whenever I hear it. But when people say: "I'm going to the store, do you want to come with?" It would also make sense that "store" is the subject in the sentence. It seems that the "...do you want to come with?" is a seperate thought and "...do you want to come with me?" would be more correct.

My whole existence hinges on an answer!

Yeah. "Come with" is short for "come with me." It's not so much an error as an intentional abbreviation, because I would say that most people who say "come with" intend it to mean "come with me."

It's missing an object of the preposition.

edit: With being the preposition, and with me being the prepositional phrase. It exists outside of the sentence's main subject and object.

Actually, store is another object of the presposition. It's the object of to in the phrase to the store. The subject of that sentence (well, actually, of just that clause) is I.

This is old, but I am new.  I just wanted to add that the French do this very same thing, but it doesn't stop with "Do you want to come with?"  Let's say you have a packet of forms that you have to fill out.  They would remind you, "Staple a picture with when you bring the forms back."  The French want pictures with EVERYTHING.

My real name is Carrie. Bop is a nick a friend gave me over a decade ago. I'm from Louisiana. I have a degree from the BYU in French/Linguistics. I lived and taught in France for a while after I graduated from BYU. I'm a pre-med student now. I'm a physics TA, which is weird because I'm really a physics novice...never had a course in it before this Summer. TheJerilyn told me to come check this place out, and Slash is one of my online heroes. I like to have fun. I like long walks on the beach with a slurpee in one hand and my dog's leash (with dog attached to the other end) in the other, except there is neither a beach nor a place to get slurpees (I know...ridiculous!) where I am. But if I had those things, I'd be doing that all the time. I'm sarcastic. Um...I have a younger sister. My dad's a dentist. My mom spends his money. My mom's side of the family is red-neckish/gangsta. My dad's side is non-existant. I'm a single, white female. That's me in the avatar feeling really sick on a river bank in Senegal. I like it because I think it makes me look tough.

Welcome Bop!  I recommend taking anything said in this mafia forum with a few grains of salt, as most of us are pretending to be someone else and/or trying to kill each other.  :)

Are you Carrie on Hatrack?  The name sounds familiar.  I'm sarcasticmuppet on the fora, normally.

The deja vu I'm getting from this thread is so thick it's giving me a headache.

And, ironically enough, I have no memory of writing the above post by me. It doesn't even sound like me to me. (I don't think I'm usually that pedantic.)
I'm pretty cool, but nowhere near as cool as Icarus is . . .

Hi, Bop! I think you're fun.

I also think TheJerilyn is fun. But why does Slash know all these Mormon girls? i'm baffled.
