But is it a sandwich?
« on: February 18, 2017, 09:18:12 PM »
I was reading about sandwiches on another forum and remembered Jonathon had a column about whether burgers and hot dogs were sandwiches.

Well, what about that mobius sliced bagel with stuff in the "middle"?

I have some plain bagels.  If I had less self control I would go mobiusize one right now.  Tomorrow is another day.

I think this discussion about sandwiches is hands-down the best I've heard yet. (It starts around 8:30.)

The chart they are talking about:

I actually agree with him that that's one of the most important requirements.

Well, when I have sliced cold cuts with lettuce on matza, that IS a sandwich. :P

So do you have a piece of matza, then the layers of stuff, then another piece of matza? I might be willing to make an exception for that.

Rivka, I'd call korech (the Hillel sandwich) a sandwich, even though no one would ever order one in a sandwich shop or eat one for lunch.

Oh, for sure. But it's within the description Jonathon just stated, neh? Matza, maror, charoset, matza.

I was finding out more about "pepperoni rolls" which are a West Virginia thing, and they were offered a sandwich exemption from meat processing
inspections if they sliced them.  The pepperoni roll people said that would defeat the identity of the rolls, and so the USDA made them a special case.  I found it really interesting that there was a legal designation of sandwich, which is important to whether meat is considered to be processed by a vendor.
