Domesday Book is now available online.  Which is good, because I can never seem to find my hardbound copy when I need it.

Nope. It was an extensive survey and census of England commissioned by William the Conquerer after he conquered England.

Before he conquered England, he was known as just William.

At the time doom meant "judgment." Here's what Wikipedia says:
Quote
When the book took the name "Domesday" (Middle English spelling of Doomsday) in the 12th century, it was to emphasize its definitiveness and authority (the analogy refers to the Christian belief of a Last Judgment).
