Is this funny?
« on: November 10, 2005, 08:53:27 AM »
I was saying the other night that my idea of heaven would be playing Scrabble with Shakespeare and Dickens.  But that would probably be someone else's idea of hell.

To which my brother added:  "Yeah, especially Shakespeare and Dickens."

I started off the game with a bingo, "vaunter" (one who vaunts) which my brother challenged and lost.  He surrendered immediately.

My other brother said something I found funny.  I can't remember what it was, though.

Oh, I remember now.  He was reading the titles of the foods in his military rations.  Like "Wheat - Snack - Bread."  And "Pork - Riblet - Barbecue".  And he said "It's like that have Yoda thinking up the titles for these things."

I laughed thoroughly at that part.

Last night I agreed to a scrabble game at my inlaws house.  Their house rules include:
Double and triple scoring squares can be used over and over.
The letter tiles are from two combined sets which may or may not be complete.
The number of tiles one has in their rack is negotiable.  Last night it was 10.

My husband put down "liquored".  I challenged and won, which cost him a 171 point score (it crossed 2 tripple word scores, even though he had only added -ed to "liquor").
At the time I was only thinking of the term "likkered up" but now I see that if a food is steeped in liquor, it would be reasonable to call it liquored.  So I guess I feel kind of bad.  The dictionary did not have a verb entry for liquor, so he lost.

This is why I hate the game Scrabble.  Every time I've played, I'm put down a perfectly valid word, but am then told that "Words this awesome are not allowed in Scrabble."

Maybe I'm not remembering the rule exactly, but that's pretty much what it seems like.

Well, earlier in the game he put down "weedle" and also "cawl".  I'm less certain on cawl, I didn't challenge it, but I haven't found it yet.

The rules are pretty simple.

1. It has to be in the dictionary.
2. It must not have any punctuation.
3. It must not be always capitalized.

You forgot italicized, which is generally the test for whether a word is actually foreign or merely foreign in origin.  That is where I start to get uncool with the establishment scrabble.  No, what was funny about this is that his family has all these weird house rules.

I'm kind of glad to know that if we ever get together with Porter we won't have to worry about playing scrabble.

I guess the real problem is that my husband is so competitive, that it's only fun to play games that have actions like killing, war, and bankruptcy in them.

If a word is in the dictionary, it need not be italicized.

Katan involves thievery and armies.  Also, he can enjoy games without those things.  I just don't like to play with him.
