It might be nice to have one that only had words I already knew. Because I seem to forget the words I already know constantly, and I could find them faster if they weren't cluttered up with a bunch of words I've never known.

I guess I never realized you could paint. I like the painting!

I've understood the reference/joke for as long as I can remember, but I have also seen you explain it before, and I'm not sure whether I ever encountered it or understood it before seeing you explain it.

I don't know WaPo's style guide at all, but I sort of think they should have had some commas in there for clarity:

Thanks for illuminating. It took me long enough to understand the first sentence of the article that I got irritated and decided to look for things to criticize, heh.

After 10 years as Utah’s governor, Gary Herbert half-jokingly converted Monday into a salesman for Speedway gas stations and its parent company, Marathon Petroleum, because they are about to become the first to sell much cleaner “Tier 3” gasoline.

Source:
https://www.sltrib.com/news/politics/2019/11/25/cleaner-tier-gas-will-be/

Am I wrong about any of these?
1. On first glance this suggests Herbert did something to Monday.
2. Should either capitalize "Gas Stations" or use "their" instead of "its".
3. It's weird for the subject and object of "converted" to be the same.
4. This article didn't get edited.

It's a 2018 pop song that is sort of a country song, sort of a hip hop song. It has been sort of ubiquitous, topping the country charts and very popular with kids (from what I understand). The lyrics include mention of horses.

I was definitely reaching with the joke. It hinges on associating hip hop with cussing & asses, and misreading barse/bass to be about musical bass.

I'm sorry. :D

process that gave us pairs like burst/bust, curse/cuss, horse/hoss, barse/bass, and arse/ass.

This reads like a brainstorm for Old Town Road.

http://mentalfloss.com/article/503970/which-food-does-your-state-hate-most

This is framed so badly it makes me mad. This is not which food each state hates most - it's whatever food each state hates more than any other state. So Chik-Fil-A is probably nowhere near the most hated food in California - it's just the food that California dislikes more than any other state.

I had to go looking, because I couldn't figure out how to say them differently.

That's how I felt when I first learned about the cot–caught merger.

Even after reading a blog just now on the cot-caught merger, I'm having trouble hearing any  difference in my head.  I'll have to seek out some audio later.

If you wish to try to simulate the distinction for people who do not normally make it, I have found that it is best to illustrate it this way:

Marry has the same vowel as Matt or mat, so IPA /æ/.
Merry has the same vowel as met, so IPA /ɛ/.
Mary has the same vowel as mate or may, so IPA /eɪ/ or /e/, depending on just how glide-y you are feeling.

Is that what sounds right to you, rivka and Tante?  (No surprise being from Utah, I was on the "they are all merry" bandwagon.)

I was wondering about the relationship between "aspirate" - to breathe - and "aspire" - to hope for or seek after.

From what I've found using online dictionaries, the latter comes from the idea of "panting after" something.  Which is kind of a funny image in contrast with the typical connotations of aspire.

Thanks!  That matches what I think I've seen, but I saw someone use the term "presider" and it made me wonder.  Looks like it's in the dictionary as the noun for one who presides, but I don't remember seeing it before.  I'll probably continue to use "boss". ;)

If someone is presiding, is it always accurate to call them a president?  Or is President a title that must be designated first?

My wife Andrea doesn't participate in tournaments or anything, but she does study the Scrabble dictionary and has been trying to memorize all the 2 and 3 letter words.

"Patent ‘Death Squad’ Rules Owners Denounce Upheld by U.S. Court"

Patent 'Death Squad' is an entity.

It makes rules:

"Patent ‘Death Squad’ Rules"

Patent owners denounce the rules:

"Patent ‘Death Squad’ Rules Owners Denounce"

The court upholds the rules:

"Patent ‘Death Squad’ Rules Owners Denounce Upheld by U.S. Court"

I think patents-that-should-never-have-been-granted both benefit and hurt lots of companies, including big players, which is not to defend the article which is terrible.

Perhaps it's a strategy to get people to read the article just to figure out what the hell the headline is supposed to mean.
