Title: Pulmonic Ingressives

A few months ago an episode of A Way With Words was discussing the pulmonic ingressive and its use in certain English dialects.  Apparently, in some regions, parts of Ireland, for example, or Maine, people will use short, sharp inhalations as part of an assent in order to underscore the agreement.  I found some examples on this page (http://www.ida.liu.se/~g-robek/Ingressive.htm) and I think it's neat.  I've certainly never heard anyone do that though.  Have any of you?

Crazy. I've never heard of ingressives used in English. I'll have to listen to some of those clips when I get home.

My ex-sister-in-law-to-be served her mission in Ireland and said it really weirded her out at first. She'd be talking to them and they'd let out these little gasps that sounded to her like "Oh my gosh! No!" But they were just being polite listeners.
