The other day we were watching some Battlestar Galactica (the episode "Home, pt. 2," I believe), and there was one scene that made me kind of groan. Some people are on a planet looking for something, and a guy asks a Cylon woman, "How much further?" She responds by saying it should be "farther" and explaining that "farther" is for physical distances while "further" is for more abstract things. Then he says something about how he's obviously not as smart as a Cylon. Ugh. Apparently even the oh-so-superior Cylons are still susceptible to linguistic fallacies.

Is what she said just plain false, or is it one of those "rules" that are more prescriptive than descriptive?

Well, it's not entirely false, but I also wouldn't say that it's simply more prescriptive than descriptive. As with most prescriptive rules, there's some kernel of truth in it, but it's a gross oversimplification that tries to force the pair of words into a complementary distribution that has never existed (or even come very close to existing) in the language.

My original point was that if the Cylons really had a superior grasp of grammar and usage, then they would know that further and farther naturally have a lot of overlap. The idea that one word should be used in one situation and the other word in all other situations is artificial.
Just like the Cylons. :fear:

I don't think I'd ever heard that "rule." When are you supposed to use "farther" and "further"?

I think I pretty much use "further" all the time except when I'm trying to make a fart joke. Is that the correct usage?

That usage is sort of antiquated, but it's still used by respectable writers. You'd be fine sticking with it.
